Sammy Hagar Alleges Van Halen Tried to ‘Bury the Van Hagar Era’
Sammy Hagar alleges Van Halen has tried “bury” his time with the band from its history.
Speaking to Ultimate Classic Rock, Hagar said, “It seems like since Van Halen did the [David Lee] Roth reunion that they tried to really bury the Van Hagar era. They wouldn’t remaster it, they wouldn’t allow it to be in movies. They wouldn’t allow it to be licensed for video games and commercials.”
Hagar makes a good point regarding the licensing. The video game Guitar Hero: Van Halen only features songs from the Roth era of the band, and nearly every single IMDb credit acknowledging the use of a Van Halen song in TV or film is also from the Roth era.
While he does understand why focus from the Van Hagar era was averted in light of the Roth reunion, Hagar adds, “It’s such great material. All number-one albums. You know, 50 million records.”
Regardless of what new music he is touring in support of, Hagar always makes a point to acknowledge his time fronting Van Halen saying, “I don’t care how proud I am of my own stuff, I can’t ignore that. That’s the biggest peak of my career. But I don’t exploit it too much…Every time we play that stuff, the audience goes crazy…We’ve added some really deep tracks recently and, man, it doesn’t matter which song you play – it ain’t just the hits. They’re not just ‘Why Can’t This Be Love.’ You play ‘Humans Being’ and the place goes f—in’ nuts. They know every word. So we’re going, ‘Man, this stuff is golden.’ It’s never gonna die, and we’re not gonna let it.”
