Lewiston Road Now Open, Work Finished Ahead of Schedule
Lewiston Road is back open again, and a day earlier than expected!
The contractor for the Lewiston Road Widening Project, ER Snell, said today the 90-Hour Road Closure and Detour project has finished ahead of schedule. Instead of re-opening Monday at 6:00 am, the area re-opened at 2:00 pm today.
What’s Now Open Again:
- I-20 Exit 190 Interchange–Traffic access now between I-20 Exit 190 and Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway
- I-20 Exit 190 Overpass–Traffic is now permitted across the Lewiston Road/Horizon South Parkway overpass over I-20
- Lewiston Road between I-20 West Ramp and William Few Parkway–Traffic is now permitted along this section of Lewiston Road
- Horizon South Parkway between I-20 East Ramp and Gateway Boulevard–Traffic is now permitted along this section of Horizon South Parkway.
The closures, which into effect Thursday, February 22, were needed to construct the remaining portions of the Diverging Diamond Interchange. The work could not be completed if traffic was crossing the bridge or using the ramps.
The just completed work included the realignments of lanes, pouring curb and gutter, pouring concrete islands, placing pavement markings, and reconfiguring, reprogramming and testing of signal equipment.
Construction Project Delayed Three Times
The 90-Hour Road closure was originally scheduled to take place from January 18-22, but weather wound up causing the project to be delayed three times.
Project officials said they didn’t want to shut down the interchange for 90 hours if they didn’t think they would be able to complete the work during that time frame. The closure involved not only local and state transportation crews, but federal and emergency services as well.
In addition to rain in the forecast, previous postponements were due to temperatures below what was needed to complete the work. Paving can’t be done if the ground temperature is less than 45 degrees.
