David Bowie Considered Reviving Ziggy Stardust Via Satellites Orbiting Earth
David Bowie once considered reviving his iconic Ziggy Stardust persona in a unique stunt that involved many different satellites orbiting the Earth.
Game designer Phil Campbell said in a new interview with U.K.’s The Mirror that Bowie shared the idea with him in the late ’90s when the singer was working on the music for the video game Omikron: The Nomad Soul.
“We talked about buying up a bunch of old satellites that were circling the Earth and he was going to relaunch Ziggy from space,” said Campbell. “The idea was that Ziggy would beam us transmissions – ‘Are you receiving me…?'”
Bowie even pitched a very unique idea about himself appearing in the Omikron: The Nomad Soul video game.
Campbell said, “One day David said, could he leave his Bowie persona in Omikron, and come out as David Jones? It was a delicious thought – did he crave the anonymity of that? And it fitted the spirit of the game: Omikron was a giant trap, you could lose your soul in there forever.”
Even though this idea never came to fruition, it’s just yet another example of how ahead of his time Bowie seemingly always was.
