8 Madonna Singles that Didn’t Hit #1
Madonna released her fourteenth studio album, Madame X, last Friday, and it’s shaping up to be her ninth album to reach number one on the Billboard 200 album chart.
According to Hits Daily Double, Madame X is estimated to move between 80-100K units, with 75-95K of that number accounting for physical albums sales.
Of course, Madonna has a lengthy history of topping the charts, particularly the Billboard 100 on which she has had 57 singles over the course of her career. Twelve of those singles went to number one, but there are some surprising tracks that somehow didn’t top the chart. Here are eight Madonna singles that didn’t hit number one.
“Holiday”
The third single from Madonna, “Holiday” was Madonna’s first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and would top out at number 16 in January 1984.

“Borderline”
While “Borderline” only charted at number 10, it does tie “Take a Bow” for being Madonna’s longest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 at 30 weeks.
“Material Girl”
The mega-hit led to Madonna being called “The Material Girl” for years, but it only hit number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Dress You Up”
Madonna’s career was on fire by time she released “Dress You Up,” the fifth single from Like A Virgin, but it somehow only reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Express Yourself”
An anthem the moment it was released, “Express Yourself” somehow only went to number two back in July 1989.
“I’ll Remember”
This beautiful ballad from the With Honors soundtrack peaked at number two in May 1994.
“Lucky Star”
The fourth single from Madonna’s self-titled debut album, “Lucky Star” coincidentally peaked at number four and was, at the time, her most successful single yet.
“Secret”
One of Madonna’s most beloved tracks and the lead single off of Bedtime Stories, “Secret” peaked at number three in November 1994.
