U2 Receiving MTV Global Icon Award, Announce Free London Gig
U2 has been named MTV’s Global Icon for 2017 and plans to celebrate in a big way.
The group will perform in London’s Trafalgar Square on Saturday (November 11), the night before it receives the honor at the MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) on at the SSE Arena Wembley. The group has launched a lottery for the 7,000 tickets available for the show, during which U2 is expected to debut some songs from its upcoming album, Songs Of Experience, due out December 1.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has welcomed the U2 show with open arms, issuing a statement via social media that, “I’m delighted that Trafalgar Square will host this special MTV Presents performance — an iconic venue for an iconic band. I have been saying, loud and clear, that London is open to talent, creativity and business. What better way to showcase this than one of the world’s greatest rock bands performing to Londoners from all backgrounds, for free, in the heart of our great city?”
U2 will be supporting Songs Of Experience with a world tour currently kicking off May 2 in Tulsa, Okla.
