New Velvet Underground Doc On The Way
A new documentary about the Velvet Underground is in the works.
The film will be directed by Todd Haynes (“Carol,” “Far From Heaven”), who announced the project this week at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. The documentary, according to Haynes, will be “intensely visual” and will include films made by the VU’s patron Andy Warhol but will also make use of “a rich culture of experimental film, a vernacular we have lost and don’t have, (and) we increasingly get further removed from,” according to Haynes.
The director hopes to interview the surviving members of the band, violist John Cale and drummer Mo Tucker, along with some of the VU’s contemporary as well as make use of archival material.
This isn’t Haynes’ first trip into the music world; He directed the 1998 feature Velvet Goldmine as well as the experimental 2007 Bob Dylan film I’m Not There, which told the story through a diverse group of six actors.
No timetable for the VU film has been determined.
