Spring Forward this weekend

It's time to SPRING FORWARD!  Daylight Saving Time starts this weekend.  While it officially begins at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, we recommend setting those clocks forward an hour before you head to bed on Saturday night!

The downside of Daylight Saving Time?  We do lose an hour of sleep.  But, we will be able to enjoy more daylight!

As a result of the time change, sunrise and sunset will occur about an hour later, leading to more light in the evening.  Daylight Saving Time will end on November 6th.

Fun Facts about Daylight Saving Time from Time And Date:

  • The U.S. first observed Daylight Saving Time in 1918.
  • DST in the U.S. starts on the second Sunday in March, and ends on the first Sunday in November.
  • "Spring Forward, Fall Back" is a great way to remember which direction to set your clock.
  • Germany was the first country to use DST on a national level in 1916.
  • The town of Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada actually used DST as far back as 1908.
  • U.S. inventor Benjamin Franklin was the first to propose the idea of Daylight Saving Time in 1784!
  • Less than 40% of countries use DST.
  • Some studies show using DST could lead to fewer traffic accidents with more daylight during times of heavier traffic.
  • Other studies show DST may cause health issues for people by affecting sleep patterns.

Time change is a great time to do some tasks that otherwise you might not think about- or that you need to do a couple times of year, but don’t have a set time.

Things like:

  1. Changing the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors– this could save your life!  If batteries have been replaced recently, at least test to ensure things are operating properly.
  2. Checking/Restocking your emergency kit. Honestly– I don’t have one of these, but maybe now is a good time to start one!
  3. Clean out your refrigerator, pantry and medicine cabinets.  It’s easy to let these areas fall to the wayside. Throw out old foods and expired medicines!
  4. Flip or rotate your mattress- this helps with the longevity of your mattress!
  5. Swap out your closet– if you rotate during the seasons.  Although, this one highly depends on the weather we’re having… and around here you never know!

Here are more things you can do this weekend for the time change!
