American Red Cross Helping Those Affected by Hurricane Laura
The American Red Cross is working tirelessly to support storm survivors across Louisiana and Texas, who are still reeling from Hurricane Laura’s devastation. Thousands of people are still without power or shelter. With the support of their partners, the American Red Cross is providing impacted communities with nourishing food, safe refuge and emergency relief supplies at service sites and throughout affected neighborhoods. In the weeks ahead, they will continue to make sure people get the help that they need to begin rebuilding their lives.

Nearly two weeks after Hurricane Laura devastated east Texas and Louisiana, tens of thousands of people are still without power or water and need assistance now. The American Red Cross is there and will be on the ground helping people in the weeks and months to come.
- In Louisiana alone, as many as 123,000 people don’t have power, and it may take weeks before it’s restored.
- While work to assess the damage left behind by Laura continues, at least 5,700 homes are either destroyed or have major damage across Louisiana and Texas.
The Red Cross is working closely with partners to provide emergency lodgings, food, water, relief supplies and other support for people whose lives have been turned upside down during this challenging time.
- Tuesday night, the Red Cross and our partners provided about 23,000 people with a safe place to stay in emergency lodgings, including hotels and shelters. If you still need a place to go, call 211 for assistance.
- More than 1,200 trained Red Cross disaster workers are supporting relief efforts on the ground or virtually.
- Dozens of service sites set up by the Red Cross and our partners are available across the hardest hit areas. Every day, thousands of people are visiting these sites to get water, food and emergency relief supplies. Visit the Red Cross Louisiana Facebook page for locations.
- The Red Cross also has teams of volunteers circulating through accessible neighborhoods to assess damage and provide food, water and snacks.
- With the help of partners, the Red Cross has already served more than 451,000 meals and snacks, and distributed nearly 151,000 relief items and cleaning supplies.
- Volunteers have provided more than 11,000 individual care contacts to help people with medical or disability needs, or provide emotional and spiritual support during this challenging time. This includes replacing prescription medications, eyeglasses or other medical equipment.
