Sammy Hagar on His New Tequila Brand with Adam Levine

Sammy Hagar and Adam Levine may seem like strange bedfellows, but they’ve joined together in a new business venture.

The two are making a new liquor, Santo Mezquila, a new blend of mescal and tequila and an offshoot and Hagar’s previous efforts in tequila and rum. Hagar tells us he’s as surprised by the association as anyone else:

“I know. Don’t ask me. We hit it off like crazy. Y’know, a guy like him comes up to me and says, ‘Dude, I grew up on you with Van Halen...It was my high school stuff, and he goes, ‘Man, seeing what you’ve done…’ He moved to Cabo and we ran into each other. He said ‘Seeing what you’ve done down here, you’re the reason I moved to Cabo.’ He’s going, ‘I just want to be like you when I grow up,’ and I said, when a guy comes up and tells you that you go, ‘Lemme buy you a drink. Let’s talk about this.’ We really get along good. Our wives get along good. He’s just a great guy.”

Levine, Hagar says, had been approached to work with some whiskey makers, but he quickly changed course:

“He goes, ‘I wanna make tequila…I drink tequila, man. I don’t want to…push whiskey,’ and I went, ‘Hey, you want to join up with us?’…We just had the name and the idea. He said, `F*** yeah!’ I said, ‘OK, gimme some money. You’re gonna be a partner. We’re not just gonna endorse it. You’re gonna put skin in the game like I do, and we’re gonna own it.’ And he jumped all over it.”

Levine, of course, is in the midst of the latest season of “The Voice” on NBC, while Hagar will be speaking today (March 16) at the South By Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas.
